The Emerald Hen - Downtown Sanford's Neighborhood Irish Pub

When visiting Downtown Historic Sanford, be sure to stop by the Emerald Hen to knock back a few pints with the locals.

G-r-r-r-r-r-auwl !

There's so much to love about our neighborhood pub the Emerald Hen that it's hard to list them all.  Every night the pub is filled with many locals, usually comprising of the same crowd.  This is sooooo reminiscent of a true European neighborhood pub when every so often a passerby or tourist comes in and there's a split moment of silence as the curious crowd see's if it's someone else that they know.  There's always a few fair hearted Hen-Groupies who welcome, meet and greet non-locals to make them feel right at home.

But our favorite part about going to the Hen is the beers, darts, pool table, and a variety of games including Monopoly, Cards, Checkers, Chess, Scrabble and the list goes on.  Now added to the fun is a weekly Trivia Night hosted every Wednesday Night but our local Sanford Herald Chief Editor, Dan-the Man.  Dan donates his time to a just cause of entertaining the local drunks by comprising an entire fun evening of trivia with a friendly but competitive crowd.  His diverse list of questions are broken into two main round each with three sub-rounds that offer beer gathering and restroom breaks.  Over the past few months of Trivia Night, the list of participants has grown drastically in numbers and teams.  Dan has created his very own Blog where he updates the winners of each weeks and offers an extremely funny commentary on some soon to be classic pictures.  His blog is well done and worth a visit and Trivia Night has become a new downtown Sanford tradition that will hopefully last for generations to come.

See:  Dan-The-Man Trivia for more information.

There's always an impressive display of beers on tap from England, Ireland, Belgium and Germany.  On Nitrogen you will find Old Speckled Hen, and Guinness and on beer gas taps you'll find Stella Artois, Tucher, Koenig, Smithwicks and so many more that there's bound to be one to satisfy any pallet.  But if taps are not your style, the Hen also carries an elaborate collection of bottled beers such as Pirrat, Chimay, 8-Ball Stout, Aventinus, Delirium Nocturnum and on and on it goes.  What you wont find at the Hen is the typical mass produced watered down American Beers.

And oh by the way, the Hen is only a couple of blocks walking distance from the Higgins House Victorian Bed and Breakfast.  What's more enticing is that right next door to the Hen is Sanford's newest blues bar called, "The Alley" making a Pub Crawl around Sanford even easier.  Remember, don't drink and drive, stay at the Higgins House instead.
